Tips for a Happy, Healthy Easter

Easter is just around the corner and we want to make sure you enjoy a healthy and “hoppy” Easter weekend with your family.

Did you know that on average, Canadians consume 5.5 kgs of chocolate every year according to Fair Trade Canada? Chocolate, as we know, often plays a major role in Easter festivities. After all, who doesn’t love a good old-fashioned Easter egg hunt? However, as ODA President Dr. Larry Levin points out, “Easter doesn’t have to be a leap from your oral health-care routine.” Here are some tips on how to enjoy your Easter celebration while still maintaining your family’s healthy smiles:

  1. Establish set times for when your children can have a treat. The best time is immediately after mealtimes, when the amount of saliva produced is greater. The saliva will help to protect your child’s teeth.
  2. Always brush and floss after consuming chocolate, candy or other sweets to help eliminate the sugar that bacteria feeds on.
  3. If you are shopping for Easter candy, opt for chocolate over sticky sweets like jelly beans or peeps. The stickier the candy, the easier it is to become lodged in between your child’s teeth, which can ultimately lead to tooth decay.
  4. Remember that the Easter bunny doesn’t have to only bring chocolate. Consider other treats instead like arts and crafts, stuffed animals, toys, music CDs or books. With spring in the air and warmer weather around the corner, outdoor gifts such as sidewalk chalk, bubbles, sand shovel sets, soccer balls and skipping ropes are great ideas as well.
